BOWEN SHEN

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and LUXURY

BIO: My name is Bowen Shen, originally from China and currently completing an MA in Fashion Design at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. My work explores the transformation of overlooked everyday materials—such as packaging tape, shipping labels, and industrial objects—into high-fashion pieces that challenge conventional ideas of luxury.

I enjoy experimenting with structure, textiles, and multi-media presentation, often combining photography, video, and installation with garments to create immersive experiences. These processes allow me to merge design with storytelling and push fashion beyond the boundaries of clothing.

My career aspiration is to gain experience within international fashion houses while building my own conceptual brand that focuses on sustainability, material innovation, and cultural critique.

I chose fashion because it is a powerful language of communication. It enables me to question consumerism, redefine value, and express identity through creativity. For me, fashion is not only wearable design but also a platform to connect ideas, cultures, and people.

The Luxury of Nothingness by Bowen Shen is a womenswear collection that redefines luxury by elevating overlooked materials, focusing on packaging tape—cheap, disposable, and often discarded. Transformed into belts, bag handles, seams, deconstructed details, and printed elements, the creases, transparency, and marks form a deliberate design language, with prints translating the concept into wearable fashion statements. By placing a utilitarian object in high fashion, Shen challenges traditional value hierarchies and uncovers beauty in the temporary, imperfect, and “worthless.” Rejecting logos and price tags, the collection turns “nothingness” into a rare, understated, and enduring form of luxury.

SHUTONG HOU

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN

BIO: My name is Shutong Hou (Hugh), and I am the designer behind HUGH.SHUTONG.

I am drawn to things with warmth and sincerity, and I like to express this through my own hand-drawing style and practical experiments. I also love soccer. The game helps me train my logical thinking, patience, and sense of flow, which often influences the way I approach design.

For me, fashion is not about chasing a fixed career goal. I simply want to find my own value in this area, to create work that carries my voice and style. If someone enjoys or connects with what I make, I feel both happy and honoured.

I cannot say exactly why I chose fashion. I love art. I love creating. I love expressing myself through different artistic forms. Fashion came to me as the right field at the right moment. I feel lucky that I can put my passion and energy into it, and I hope my designs continue to grow from that place.

One for All is a menswear collection by Shutong Hou (Hugh) that challenges the constraints of standard sizing, questioning why bodies must conform to rigid, uniform systems. Through deconstruction and reorganisation, the collection explores freedom of movement and form, using modular approaches to expand possibilities for the body.

Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s transformation of three-dimensional images into flat structures, the designs translate “unfolding” and “reorganisation” into garments with multidimensional visual language. More than a collection, One for All is an inclusive design declaration, offering versatile dressing methods for all bodies and genders. The collection advocates a revolution of the body, celebrating individuality and diversity while redefining fashion as an open, accepting space for self-expression.

WANYI ZHU

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and TAILORING

BIO: My name is Wanyi Zhu, a fashion designer from Shanghai. I am passionate about exploring the intersections of culture, history, and identity through fashion, drawing inspiration from the world around me. My interests include observing society and studying the roles of women across different cultural contexts, transforming these insights into a visual language within my designs.

For me, fashion is not only about creating garments but also about expressing ideas, strength, and emotions. It serves as a dialogue across time and geography, allowing audiences to connect with the uniqueness and diversity of culture.

I chose fashion because it allows me to merge creativity with the expression of culture and identity. Through my designs, I aim to highlight the power of women, the diversity of identity, and the fearless spirit that defines them.

Future Oriental is a womenswear collection by Wanyi Zhu (Julia), inspired by her Chinese cultural heritage and a contemporary vision of femininity. Drawing from Minnan traditions, the designs explore women’s strength and adaptability, emphasising fluidity between identities rather than singular roles.

Precise tailoring, structured silhouettes, and careful attention to proportion and material reinterpret cultural values, while reflective sewing threads serve as a signature detail: under natural light, garments appear composed and minimal, but under flash or intense illumination, hidden stitched pathways shimmer like constellations. This duality merges craft with light-responsive technology and symbolises resilience and visibility—reminding that even in obscurity, women remain luminous, carrying their presence into spaces that might seek to diminish them.

YIJIA FENG

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and SPORTSWEAR

BIO: The Stitch of Memory and Emotion by Yijia Feng (Eve) is a unisex collection inspired by the intimacy and comfort of plush toys. Focusing on the rabbit as a symbolic figure, the collection reimagines this familiar object through deconstruction and reconstruction, transforming childhood memories into three-dimensional tailoring.

Playful pattern-cutting, meticulous craftsmanship, and experiments with diverse materials reinterpret the adult longing for softness and attachment into androgynous silhouettes. Addressing the emotional void left by the post-pandemic era, the collection bridges nostalgia with contemporary fashion. Each garment becomes a vessel of memory and feeling, inviting wearers to experience clothing not only as protection or style, but also as a tender, playful medium of connection.

YUEYING ZHANG

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and STYLE

BIO: Imperfection by Yueying Zhang (Zoey) is a unisex collection inspired by the designer’s childhood experience as a dancer whose body could never meet society’s rigid standards. Centred on the theme of “aesthetic deformity,” the collection critiques society’s obsession with standardised success and educational models that overlook genuine talent and personal interest.

Using unconventional materials and exaggerated silhouettes, the garments embody the tension between societal ideals and individual limitations. Through deconstruction, bold proportions, and tactile textures, the designs convey struggle, resilience, and the journey toward reclaiming one’s authentic self. Imperfection asks: What is true perfection, and what does it mean to live only to satisfy others? It is a call to reject perfectionism and embrace self-compassion.

ZIXUAN NIE

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN

BIO: My name is Nie Zixuan, and I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in Fashion Design at the University of Southampton in the UK, after completing my undergraduate studies in China. My main interest lies in exploring the relationship between silhouette, structure, and the human body. I enjoy working with form and construction, using experimentation to push the boundaries of how clothing can shape identity and movement.

What excites me about fashion is its unique role as both a personal expression and a cultural language. I am particularly drawn to research-driven design that connects creativity with social, technological, and conceptual themes. This process allows me not only to design garments but also to question how fashion reflects and influences human experience.

Looking ahead, my career aspiration is to pursue doctoral research in fashion design, focusing on the deeper theoretical and structural aspects of clothing. Ultimately, I hope to contribute to both academia and the design industry, and to return to China as a university lecturer. I believe advanced research will equip me to guide the next generation of designers while continuing to develop my own creative vision.

Upper City / Lower City is a menswear collection by Zixuan Nie that explores the tension between technological advancement and natural evolution in a speculative future society. The “Upper City” embodies precision, structure, and functional aesthetics, expressed through geometric patchwork, contrasting fabric sheens, and architectural tailoring. The “Lower City” draws from biological forms and animal traits—such as frilled-neck lizards and centaur-like limbs—using mixed materials and sculptural interventions to evoke mutation and primal energy.

Reoriented sleeves, angular trouser details, and experimental silhouettes transform garments into narrative forms, reflecting social hierarchy, evolutionary divergence, and the interplay of technology and nature.

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and SPORTSWEAR

BIO: I identify myself as a research-driven fashion designer whose practice moves fluidly between conceptual exploration and material experimentation. My design direction is focused on the intersection of aesthetics, technology and cultural critique- where garments are not only visual expressions but are also narratives that question our relationship with society, nature and the body.

Through projects such as Apocalyptic Revival, Seven Deadly Sins of Fashion and Celebrating the Grotesque, I have developed key strengths in conceptual research, visual storytelling and fabric innovation. My skills include experimentation with thermo- sensitive textiles, crating narrative-based collections through critical theory and translating philosophical ideas into wearable forms.

With academic training and cross-disciplinary research, I am able to contribute to the fashion industry by offereing designs that merge sustainability, critical reflection and bold aesthetics- garments that speak both to the present and to future cultural shifts.

JIABAO LI

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN - SPORTSWEAR

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and SPORTSWEAR

BIO: In the sportswear design industry, I have my own unique design theory, and I am proud of it. My works will be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Meanwhile, my design will be considering the main application areas of the garments and incorporating some interesting characteristics. Previously, I worked as a store salesperson for many brands such as lululemon, On, and Salomon which enhanced my work sense.

Nowadays, I am mainly focused on sportswear design that meet people’s need. I believe my greatest strength lies in my ability to truly understand what kind of sportswear people need. I can meet the demands of professional elite athletes, such as enhancing breathability and quick-drying properties, while also taking into account the aesthetic needs of the general customer. Also, I have managed to make the patterns and silhouettes of the clothing serve the people. For a fashion designer, the greatest happiness is the moment when the design is actually realised. And I truly enjoy this experience. From my point of view, I’d like to design from idea generation to the final work, as below figure shows my design process is coherent and clear.
