WANYI ZHU

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and TAILORING

BIO: My name is Wanyi Zhu, a fashion designer from Shanghai. I am passionate about exploring the intersections of culture, history, and identity through fashion, drawing inspiration from the world around me. My interests include observing society and studying the roles of women across different cultural contexts, transforming these insights into a visual language within my designs.

For me, fashion is not only about creating garments but also about expressing ideas, strength, and emotions. It serves as a dialogue across time and geography, allowing audiences to connect with the uniqueness and diversity of culture.

I chose fashion because it allows me to merge creativity with the expression of culture and identity. Through my designs, I aim to highlight the power of women, the diversity of identity, and the fearless spirit that defines them.

Future Oriental is a womenswear collection by Wanyi Zhu (Julia), inspired by her Chinese cultural heritage and a contemporary vision of femininity. Drawing from Minnan traditions, the designs explore women’s strength and adaptability, emphasising fluidity between identities rather than singular roles.

Precise tailoring, structured silhouettes, and careful attention to proportion and material reinterpret cultural values, while reflective sewing threads serve as a signature detail: under natural light, garments appear composed and minimal, but under flash or intense illumination, hidden stitched pathways shimmer like constellations. This duality merges craft with light-responsive technology and symbolises resilience and visibility—reminding that even in obscurity, women remain luminous, carrying their presence into spaces that might seek to diminish them.

YUEYING ZHANG

DISCIPLINE: FASHION DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: FASHION DESIGN and STYLE

BIO: Imperfection by Yueying Zhang (Zoey) is a unisex collection inspired by the designer’s childhood experience as a dancer whose body could never meet society’s rigid standards. Centred on the theme of “aesthetic deformity,” the collection critiques society’s obsession with standardised success and educational models that overlook genuine talent and personal interest.

Using unconventional materials and exaggerated silhouettes, the garments embody the tension between societal ideals and individual limitations. Through deconstruction, bold proportions, and tactile textures, the designs convey struggle, resilience, and the journey toward reclaiming one’s authentic self. Imperfection asks: What is true perfection, and what does it mean to live only to satisfy others? It is a call to reject perfectionism and embrace self-compassion.

DONNA JI

DISCIPLINE: GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: GRAPHIC DESIGN and TYPOGRAPHY

BIO: I see typography as more than legibility - it’s a system of expression shaped by contrast, scale, and repetition. My work is deeply influenced by the precision of Swiss style, where grids create hierarchy and clarity, yet leave room for exploration. I draw inspiration from studios like Experimental Jetset, who reveal how a single element - often Helvetica - can generate limitless visual possibilities through restraint and minimalism.

For me, identity is fluid, emerging through structured variations where hierarchy transforms type into a vibrant visual language. By working within the grid while pushing against its boundaries, I use design systems to build narratives that balance order, clarity, and creative expansion.

ELLE ROFE

DISCIPLINE: TEXTILE DESIGN

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: Considering a Masters degree in Costume Design or Illustration.

BIO:  I am confident in my creative identity and take pride in applying it to my work. My work is illustrative in nature, leaning into my love of both alternative fashion and theatrical costume with an emphasis on exaggerated silhouettes aiming to evoke an appearance of an unidentifiable species, especially in my fashion illustration and visualisations. I also possess an excellent attention to detail, showcased.

One of my key strengths is my attention to detail. I am drawn to delicate but extravagant designs, patterns and silhouettes which would translate well onto stage. I am skilled at illustration and my aforementioned  affinity for detail assists me in visually expressing my ideas, creating intricate, whimsical designs. For this reason, I have a fascination with theatrical costume as one has the freedom to design and create outlandish, garish pieces with the peace of mind that they are only to be worn within the vignette that they are created for, practicality and ergonomics aside. Expanding on this, I have experience in costume making as I used to be part of a carnival troupe as a teenager and so am well versed at designing and creating sculptural, dynamic pieces with a sense of movement.

LAVANYA SHARMA

DISCIPLINE: GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

CAREER AREA OF INTEREST: UI-UX, Product development

BIO: As a Graphic Communication student on placement year with Deans Arts and Humanities Deans Global Talent Scholarship, my practice is driven by a passion for inclusivity, accessibility, and innovation. I am particularly interested in UI/UX design and product development, where creativity and functionality come together to solve meaningful problems and improve everyday experiences.

Design, to me, is about more than aesthetics—it is about designing for need. This approach led me to develop a sign language innovation, which won the 100 Big Ideas competition and is now being developed into a scalable product. The experience reinforced my interest in combining entrepreneurship with design, creating solutions that break down barriers and reach wider audiences.

I enjoy experimenting with new technologies and mixed media, often blending traditional techniques with emerging tools. A recent highlight was a virtual reality exhibition on multiculturalism, which invited participants to immerse themselves in diverse cultural perspectives. Projects like this deepen my belief in the potential of design to foster empathy, dialogue, and connection.

Looking ahead, I aspire to build a career in UI/UX or product development, creating human-centred solutions that are both impactful and innovative. My goal is to continue learning, experimenting, and contributing to a design practice that is socially responsive and future-focused.
